REBUILDING TOGETHER OAKLAND – April 25, 2009 (National Rebuilding Together Day)

Every year for the past three years Shorenstein has participated in helping to rehabilitate a home for an elderly or low income resident. This year we were happy to participate once again. This year's Rebuilding Together Oakland (RTO) house located at 2357 E. 20th Street, is a beautiful two-story Victorian era home which is estimated to have been built in the 1880’s. This home features 14 feet high ceilings and detailed moldings. The home owner, Ms. Dewberry has lived in her home for 46 years.

Thanks to the awesome and unselfish efforts of TEAM Construction, Monticelli Painting, Qualified Plumbers, O.N. Electric, IKEA, Lewis Merlo & Terminix we were able to provide much needed home repairs.

And through the hard work of all of our volunteers we painted, cleaned and brightened Ms. Dewberry's home considerably.

SoGreen Yogurt – A Fresh Taste at Oakland City Center, Coming Soon!

Oakland City Center is excited to announce the opening of SoGreen Yogurt. According to SoGreen’s Daniel Hwang, his company’s philosophy emphasizes quality over quantity, and stresses the importance of using natural and high-quality ingredients in his line of frozen yogurt, smoothies, gourmet tea lattes and other edibles. SoGreen’s frozen treats come in unique flavors including Green Tea, seasonal fresh fruit, and the intriguingly simple Tart—an unflavored, delicately sweetened frozen yogurt. SoGreen hopes that each customer will leave the store feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.

SoGreen, a San Francisco-based company, has become a favorite on the other side of the bay. As the days begin to warm up at the Oakland City Center, we are excited for the opportunity to welcome SoGreen and its light and tasty treats to our neighborhood!

Consistently Eventful - Carmen Santisteban at
Oakland City Center

Carmen Santisteban, the Marketing Coordinator at Oakland City Center since September 2008, was previously Leasing Assistant to the Vice President of Leasing. Carmen’s work has always played an integral role in making Oakland City Center an enjoyable place to work and play. The variety of performances that regularly take place on the Plaza might include both musical and cultural material. Carmen works hard to coordinate, and provide all of us with not only a break in the work day but also a chance to experience new sights and sounds. Her participation in local community-based organizations also helps ensure that culture and development in Oakland will continue to blossom for many years to come.

Professional
Q. How long have you worked at the Oakland City Center?
A. Last August I celebrated my 10-year anniversary here at Oakland City Center; I may just retire here!

Q. What do you enjoy most about your current position?
A. If I had to choose one thing, it would be coordinating the music and entertainment for the Plaza. I enjoy observing the end result: everyone enjoying themselves and listening to great local musicians. Oakland City Center has enjoyed live entertainment on the Plaza for over 20 years.

Q. What do you like best about your job here?
A. The atmosphere and the people. There’s a wonderful sense of community here at Oakland City Center.

Q. How would you best describe your business philosophy?
A. Get the job done with a smile!

Q. How do you stay personally motivated?
A. I approach most situations as a challenge and opportunity to learn something new— I find that keeps me going!

Personal
Q. What one word describes you best?
A. Committed.

Q. What are some of your interests?
A. I love to dance! I also enjoy spending time with my children and my large family.

Q. Where would you like to go for your next vacation?
A. Brazil, so I can learn to Samba! Everything about Brazil is so exotic and beautiful, the music, the beaches, the language and the people.

Q. If you had to choose a second profession, what would it be?
A. Once upon a time, I wanted to be a ballerina; I was young and full of dreams! Today, I would choose a career in event planning. I get so much joy in knowing that you made someone’s special day the best possible.

Q. What do you enjoy most about working in Oakland?
A. What isn’t there to enjoy about Oakland. The weather is perfect, never too hot or cold, the location is ideal and the culture in Oakland is so diverse! I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF ORCHID PLANTS!
PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY GIFT OR FOR YOUSELF!

• Growing Phalaenopsis orchid plants is very easy and Phalaenopsis has beautiful orchid flowers of vivid colors including white, pink, lavender and yellow. The blooms open along a long orchid flower spike sometimes two feet in length, and may produce up to 15 or more orchid flowers per spike.
• The Phalaenopsis flowers measure up to four inches, are long lasting with individual blooms, may remain open for six weeks or longer. The Phalaenopsis orchid boasts long arching sprays of flowers resembling a flight of pale moths in moonlight consequently this particular orchid plant is named the Moth Orchid. The most popular colors are the soft whites with yellow or red lips, and the glowing pinks and blushes. Other flower shades of this orchid are deep red, vibrant orange and spotted and striped.
